Beaverbrook
Lord Beaverbrook's old house on the Surrey Hills, restored with a Japanese grill

This was Cherkley Court, the country house of the press baron Lord Beaverbrook, where Churchill and Lloyd George were regular guests. After a long restoration it reopened as a hotel spread across several distinct parts of the estate: the main House, a cluster of cottages known as the Village, the Garden House and the Coach House.
The 470 acres run up into the Surrey Hills, with Box Hill and the Mole valley on the doorstep, and the estate is large enough that walking, riding and a round of tennis can fill a day without leaving it. The Coach House Spa is small by modern country-house standards but well judged, looking out over the hills rather than inward.
Dining is unusually varied for a country hotel — a Japanese grill in the main house, a garden restaurant among the glasshouses, an all-day room named for Mrs Beeton and a deli for casual lunches. Central London is under an hour by train from Leatherhead, which makes Beaverbrook one of the easiest escapes in the South East.
