The Ocean Club was built by the A&P heir Huntington Hartford as a private club, and its Versailles Gardens still climb in formal terraces from the sea to a twelfth-century French cloister he had shipped over stone by stone. It remains the most graceful piece of hotel landscaping in the Bahamas.
The hotel is comparatively small for Paradise Island, with around a hundred rooms plus villas and a set of larger residences, all set along or near a broad beach that is markedly quieter than the neighbouring Atlantis strip.
Dine at Dune, the long-running Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant on the beach. Beyond that there is a Four Seasons spa in a garden of private treatment villas, a golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf, tennis and full access to Atlantis' water park next door for those who want it.
