A 1920s palace on the hills above Tangier, restored as the city's grandest hotel

The Tazi Palace was built in the 1920s for a senior Moroccan official and spent decades in various diplomatic and institutional hands before a long restoration returned it to something close to its original state. It reopened as a Fairmont with the marble halls, carved arcades and formal gardens intact, high on the hillside above Tangier with the Strait of Gibraltar and, on clear days, the Spanish coast in view.

Rooms and suites are generously scaled and lean into the palace idiom rather than resisting it. Four restaurants cover Moroccan, Mediterranean and Asian ground, and the spa runs a Thai-influenced treatment list alongside a traditional hammam.

Tangier itself has shed its faded reputation and is worth the time: the kasbah, the Grand Socco, the American Legation museum and the Cafe Hafa clifftop terrace that Bowles and the Rolling Stones made famous. The hotel is a short drive above all of it.
