Bairro Alto Hotel
A rooftop over Chiado, on the square where three Lisbon districts meet

The hotel occupies a restored eighteenth-century building on Praça Luís de Camões, the square where Chiado, Bairro Alto and Bica run into each other. That position is the whole argument for staying here: the bookshops and cafés of Chiado on one side, the steep nightlife streets of Bairro Alto on the other, and the Bica funicular around the corner.
A long refurbishment reopened the hotel in 2019 with more rooms, more space and a considerably better rooftop. The fifth-floor restaurant and terrace look out over the river and the tiled roofs of the old city, and are as popular with Lisboetas as with guests, which is usually a good sign.
Inside, the mood is contemporary Portuguese rather than international-luxury: local ceramics, cork, and work by Portuguese designers. There is a patisserie at street level, a mezzanine bar, and a small wellness centre. It is a Leading Hotels of the World member and one of the few genuinely luxurious options in the historic centre rather than the avenues uphill.
