Seteais was built in the 1780s for a Dutch consul and extended a couple of decades later with the triumphal arch that still frames the drive, raised to mark a royal visit. It has been a hotel since the mid twentieth century and passed from the Tivoli group to Valverde at the start of 2024, which brought a change of name and a lighter touch inside.
The interiors are the draw: frescoed walls, period furniture and tall windows opening onto formal gardens laid out on the slope, with the Sintra hills behind and the Atlantic visible on a clear day. It is a small hotel by palace standards, and the scale keeps it from feeling like a museum you happen to sleep in.
Sintra's UNESCO-listed cultural landscape is on the doorstep. The Pena Palace, the Moorish castle and the strange subterranean gardens of Quinta da Regaleira are all within a short drive, and Lisbon is well under an hour away. The hotel has a pool, gardens, a spa and the Marialva restaurant.
