Angama — Swahili for "suspended in mid-air" — sits on the lip of the Oloololo Escarpment, three hundred metres above the floor of the Mara Triangle. It is one of the great views in African hospitality, and the camp is built entirely around it: two small camps of glass-fronted tented suites, each facing out over a plain that stretches to the horizon and into Tanzania beyond.

The hillside below is the location where much of Out of Africa was filmed, and the lodge maintains the picnic site on the spot. Interiors are bright and modern rather than colonial pastiche — pale canvas, Maasai red accents, floor-to-ceiling glass, a writing desk positioned where you will actually use it.

Game drives descend the escarpment into the Mara Triangle, the best-managed and least-crowded sector of the reserve, and the Mara River crossings during the July-to-October migration are within reach. The lodge also runs a beadwork studio and shamba garden employing the local community, guided escarpment walks, and a photographic studio with professional lenses on loan.
