Gordes is the postcard that sold Provence to the world, a pile of dry-stone houses stacked on a limestone spur, and this hotel occupies one of the best positions on it. The building is an eighteenth-century bastide layered onto older foundations, terraced down the rock so that the pool, the gardens and most of the bedrooms face south over the Luberon valley. Interiors lean into weathered oak, stone floors and muted linen rather than the heavy Provençal cliche.
The spa is the property's real surprise: several floors carved into the hillside, with an indoor pool, hammam, and a treatment list that runs long enough to fill a wet afternoon. Dining moves between a formal restaurant and easier terrace service, and the kitchen leans hard on the market at nearby Coustellet and the estate's own produce.
The hotel joined the Airelles group in recent years, which brought a level of service more often found in Paris or Courchevel to a village of two thousand people. Cycling into the Luberon, the ochre quarries at Roussillon, and the Sénanque abbey lavender fields are all within a short drive.
