Wilderness Reserve is not a hotel. It is a 5,000-acre Suffolk estate — lakes, woodland, meadow and parkland, much of it rewilded over the past two decades — across which eighteen houses have been restored and let out one party at a time. You book a building, not a bedroom, and the estate belongs to you for the duration.

The properties range from one-bedroom keeper's cottages and off-grid boltholes to Sibton Park, a Grade II* listed 1827 house by Decimus Burton with seventeen bedrooms, a walled garden and its own swimming pool and spa. The restorations are unusually serious — reclaimed materials, period-correct joinery, heritage paint — and deliberately unbranded, so each house reads as a private home rather than an outpost.

Everything is arranged rather than advertised: a chef and housekeeping team if you want them, boats on the lakes, tennis, wild swimming, clay shooting, cycling across the estate tracks. The Suffolk coast at Southwold, Aldeburgh and Dunwich is twenty minutes east, and Snape Maltings is close enough for a concert and a late drive home.
