Matfen Hall is a Gothic-revival country house in the rolling farmland west of Newcastle, home to the Blackett family from the 1830s until 2022 and Grade II* listed for good reason — the Great Hall, with its pitch-pine columns and glazed roof, is one of the finest rooms of its kind in the North East.

New ownership closed the property and spent heavily restoring it: bedrooms upgraded, the Great Hall brought back, the leisure facilities renewed, and a new spa wing built around an internal courtyard with pools, thermal cabins and treatment rooms. Total investment has been reported above £40 million, which for a house of this scale in Northumberland is transformative.

The estate runs a well-regarded parkland golf course through mature woodland and lakes, and the setting is the real luxury — Hadrian's Wall and the Roman forts are a short drive south, the Cheviots and Kielder's dark skies to the north, and Newcastle close enough for a city evening.
