The Baix Empordà is the part of Catalonia that the coast road tends to skip: flat farmland, medieval villages built in golden stone, and a string of rocky coves a few kilometres east. Mas de Torrent is a masia, a fortified Catalan farmhouse, dating from 1751 and converted into a hotel without losing the weight of the original building.
Rooms divide between the old house, where beams and stone arches dominate, and garden suites in the grounds, several with private pools and terraces facing the Montgrí massif. The gardens are mature, the main pool sits among cypresses, and the spa is a modern addition handled discreetly.
The kitchen works with Empordà produce and the region's underrated wines. Beyond the gate, Pals and Peratallada are among the best-preserved medieval villages in Catalonia, Begur and its coves are fifteen minutes away, and Girona and the Dalí museum at Figueres make comfortable day trips.
