Knockinaam Lodge
A private cove on the Irish Sea, where Churchill and Eisenhower once talked D-Day

Knockinaam sits at the bottom of a wooded glen in its own private cove, three miles from Portpatrick on the Rhins of Galloway, with thirty acres around it and nothing between the lawn and the Irish Sea but shingle. On a clear evening the Antrim coast is visible across the water.
The lodge was built in 1869 as a hunting retreat and has a genuine footnote in history: Churchill and Eisenhower met here during planning for the D-Day landings, and one of the ten bedrooms still carries Churchill's name. It holds AA five stars and three AA rosettes, and the kitchen serves a seven-course set dinner with no choices, which is very much the point.
Galloway is Scotland's most overlooked corner — the Mull of Galloway, Logan Botanic Garden and the Southern Upland Way all lie within reach, and there is a helipad for those who prefer to skip the drive.
